Welcome to the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA)
NELA aims to enable the
improvement of the quality of care for patients undergoing, or considered for, emergency
laparotomy through the provision of high quality comparative data from
all providers of emergency laparotomy in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
NELA is being carried out by the
Royal College of Anaesthetist’s Centre for Research and Improvement, in conjunction with surgical and other key
stakeholders.
UPDATES ON DATA COLLECTION
Please note that due to unforeseen circumstances, our Year 12 EmLap and Year 2 NoLap data collection years will continue collecting data until approximately 1st May 2026, when we expect our new audit year to commence alongside our new data collection platform. The locking deadline for Year 12/Year 2 NoLap will be extended accordingly. Stay tuned for further information.

Patient Leaflet - Recovering Well
Clinicians from Cardiff and Vale Health Board, in collaboration with the NELA team, have created a leaflet for patients for what to expect after surgery. We think this is a hugely valuable resource and we hope you will share it with your patients, or let them know where they can find it. It is now available on our website: ../information/nelappi
